Clean Air Network unites with transport sector to jointly urge the Government to increase subsidies to retire old diesel vehicles

For the first time ever, an environmental group and the transport sector are working together to present coordinated solutions to the government. CAN, Legislative Councillor Miriam Lau and eleven transport associations issued a joint declaration urging the Government to increase subsidies for trucks and non-franchised buses in order to get these polluting vehicles off our roads as soon as possible. We also requested that a scrapping subsidy be introduced. (Olds trucks and buses emit a large proportion of HK's roadside pollution.) This united action between CAN and the transport sector sends a clear signal that ALL Hong Kong people and businesses want clean air. Read the press release here

Recap of the Legislative Council Meeting on 8 Sept 2010 on the Motion “Air Quality and Public Health”

Legislative Councillor Kam Nai-wai put forward another air pollution-related motion at a Legco meeting last Wednesday, the second such motion this year. Kam’s original motion and three other legislators’ amendments , although non-binding, were passed unanimously by all Councillors. The EPD, on the other hand, refused to give a time table for renewal of the Air Quality Objectives. Legislators at the meeting criticized the EPD as being slow and reluctant to act to create effective clean air policies. Read the recap of the meeting here

Complaint letter to Ombudsman accepted

Last month, CAN, Friends of the Earth and the Asthma Society jointly issued a formal complaint letter to the office of the Ombudsman against the EPD for undue delay in announcing new Air Quality Objectives. After preliminary review, the Ombudsman formally accepted our complaint, meaning that further investigation will be carried out. We will update you when the Ombudsman concludes its investigation.
